As a key member of \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003eGiorgio Moroder\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e's team, the legendary Geoff Bastow shouldn't need any introduction. You'll be familiar with his singular brilliance as the brains behind the much-sampled boogie\/disco classics \"You Don't Like My Music (Hupendi Muziki Wangu?!)\" and \"Don't Stop,\" released by his group, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003eK.I.D.\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e But 1975's \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eMusic To Varnish Owls By\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e is where it all began. It's packed with incredibly soulful, soothing music that -- despite being utilized a few times by \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003eKnxwledge\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e -- remains still largely un-mined. So, beat-makers, get cracking. Born in 1949, Bastow was a Munich-based English songwriter and record producer. Originally working as a guitarist and pianist in dance bands around his home county of Yorkshire, he moved to London in the early 1970s and then Munich in around 1976. He was one of the main architects of the Munich disco sound of electronic innovator Giorgio Moroder and also released heaps of killer library records for legendary labels like Bruton, Impress, JW Music Library and the Munich-based Sonoton between the 1970s-2000s. Bastow died tragically young, in Berlin, Germany on 16 March 2007, at the age of just 57. But he left behind a truly incredible electronic music legacy. He deserves to be much better known and this reissue should bring him to a fair few more ears. The Amsterdam-based Egyptian DJ has been collecting cassettes from Arab-speaking countries and its diaspora for many years and has amassed a vast collection of Egyptian music concentrating on the '80s, the sound he grew up listening to. His goal has been to search for these rare sounds and make them known to a new vinyl-hungry audience. During this decade, the rich Egyptian music industry, which had seen such stars as \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003eOum Kalthoum\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003eAbdel Halim Hafez\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, and \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003eWarda\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e take the Arab world by storm in the '60s and '70s, was going through a new phase and the cassette format was the cause. This radical change enabled many young musicians and producers to spread their music directly to consumers duplicating cassettes themselves. A new vibrant music scene erupted in Cairo blending their sound with trends coming from the US and Europe including, of course, disco, soul, and funk. The cream from this scene was soon picked up by the most daring labels, including \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003eMohsen Gaber\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e's Alam El Phan, Sout El Hob, and Americana. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eSharayet El Disco\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e gives you a glimpse of these great tracks which -- for most of them -- were only ever released on cassette.
